MIHAI RETEGAN (n. 1950)

Educational background: Faculty of History, Bucharest, 1970 – 1974

Professional activity: scientific researcher with the Military History Institute (which had several names over the years, 1974 – 1995), professor at the Faculty of History, University of Bucharest (1995 – ). Ph.D. in history (1993), recipient of the Romanian Academy Award (1985).
Secretary General of the History and Culture European Forum, which has a branch in Chişinău.
Studied the history of Bessarabia in the interwar period and during World War II. Co-authored the volumes 1918. Făurirea României Mari (“1918. The Birth of Greater Romania” – 1993, along with Constantin Botoran) and Ostaşi, vă ordon treceţi Prutul (“Soldiers, I hereby order you to cross the Prut” – 1991, along with Alesandru Duţu). The article Chestiunea Basarabiei în relaţiile româno-sovietice în anii şaizeci (“The Bessarabian issue in Romanian-Soviet relations during the 1960s”) was published based on documents available in the British Archives.

Regular attendant of the annual meetings held by Romanian historians in both countries, organized by the Forum starting 1999, delivering several presentations on various topics, such as World War II, the spread of communism over Central and Eastern European countries, Romania’s foreign policy.

Author and co-author of several papers, monographs, volumes of documents and compilations of studies, among which: Război politic în blocul comunist. Relaţii româno-sovietice în anii şaizeci (“Political war in the communist bloc. Romanian-Soviet relations during the 1960s”), Vol. I-II (2002-2004); 1989. Principiul dominoului (“1989. The domino principle”), 2000; Război şi societate (“War and Society”), 1999; 1968 din primăvară până în toamna (“1968 from spring to fall”) (1998. English and Czech editions); În balanţa forţelor (“The balance of powers”), 1997; România în război (1941-1945). Un destin în istorie (“Romania at war (1941-1945). A destiny in history”), 1995; 23 August 1944. Documente (“23 August 1944. Documents”), Vol. I-IV, 1984-1985.
